H e l l o!
On the blog this week, it’s all about commercial interior design trends to keep an eye on by Brian Jeffries, guest blogger. According to Brian, commercial interior design doesn't have to be boring and all about function. Commercial interiors can also be aesthetically pleasing. Here are the trends Brian suggest we keep an eye on.
Flexible Furniture
Find ways to incorporate flexible furniture that revolves around your business needs. Look at your space and see how you can rearrange your selected furniture piece to accommodate multiple uses.
Flexible furniture allows for mixed-use spaces which can be of benefit in a commercial setting. In an office, this may look like a waiting room that can transform into a group brainstorming area with a simple rearrangement of the furniture. Of course, you should also ensure that the flexible furniture you choose is ergonomic to support employee and customer health. For example, sit-to-stand desks are a piece of furniture that support ergonomics.
Natural Light
Natural light is a trick to keep everyone in a commercial space more productive. It can be easy to give in to exhaustion when you are in a dimly lit, stagnant place so bringing natural light into commercial interior design has become a hot trend. One way to incorporate natural light into the interior is to think about it from the exterior.
Glass curtain walls are elemental in bringing natural light deeper into the commercial space during the architectural design. If you are designing an already existing space, there are other ways to bring natural light in. One of these ways is through using glass walls on the interior rather than traditional sheetrock. Glass wall systems are an interior design trend that allows natural light to filter throughout the space instead of being blocked by a non-light penetrating wall.
Additionally, if your commercial space is lacking in windows overall, there are circadian lighting systems that mimic natural daylight giving the appearance of a sunny day throughout the office.
Greenery
Bringing nature into commercial spaces has been a trend for a while now, but it only continues to grow (pun intended!). The easiest way to bring the calmness of nature into a commercial space is through live greenery. Whether you place potted plants strategically around the room or you go for a living wall, utilizing greenery in commercial spaces is a trend that is here to stay.
Another way to bring elements of nature into your interior design is through the use of natural textures and colors. Go for point colors found in nature, natural wood finishes, and soft textures to complete an immersive, relaxing commercial environment.
Modern Flooring
Gone are the days of grungy carpet. The trend of modern flooring is taking off. Some of the most popular options are polished stained concrete floors, faux hardwood floors, and carpet tiles that can be mixed matched and replaced once dirty or worn. These modern flooring designs are much easier to clean, durable, and look great with any interior design theme.
Brighter Colors
In addition to colors found in nature, bright colors have also become a trend. Though these might deem light opposites, they can actually oftentimes be combined. Think of the bright turquoise on peacocks or the vibrant warm colors of the sunset. Bright colors improve mood and curate a happy, positive commercial environment which is why they have become so popular.
Implement these colors into statement furniture pieces, window treatments, or interior design accents. Just keep the color palette contained. It is easy when integrating color into spaces to have too many conflicting colors creating a busy, distracting environment.
Utilizing the Ceiling
One of the new commercial interior design trends to keep an eye on is utilizing the ceiling in your design. Decorative ceiling panels are a great way to implement this idea. Typically commercial spaces leave their industrial ceilings open creating a noisy space or they use those plain white ceiling tiles that can’t help but feel clinical.
Decorative ceiling panels add dimension and keep the acoustics to a minimum. Not utilizing the ceiling in commercial interior design can make your overall look get lost in the open space. Elements like decorative ceiling tiles bring design into a cohesive look and contain the eye to really see the vision.
