This weekend is BDNY (Boutique Design New York), the leading trade conference for everything Hospitality. BDNY connects the most inventive manufacturers and the most influential design minds in the hospitality industry for two days of discovery, education and design conversations. As I prepare for my visit to the Big City, I am thinking about the design for our most recent Boutique Hotel client and the design we created for them. My clients were very passionate about creating a welcoming environment for the Millennial Client.
We were aiming at breaking with tradition, being authentic and unexpected and bringing a breath of fresh air to the Boutique Hotel scene in Philadelphia. The collaborative goal was to appeal to the growing millennial and digital nomad demographic by leveraging social experiences, technology and unique lodging.
Upon entering the Hotel, guests are greeted with a digital kiosk where they can check in at their leisure. Self- service screens touch screens speak the Millennial Language.
The Public Amenity spaces were designed to foster social interaction between guests.
When it comes to eating, we tend to not just sit in a formal restaurant for breakfast because it’s boring. We want to have the choice whether we want to have a full meal or we want to just graze on something or we want to catch something as we go. We may want to work with people around us in the lobby, we may want a semi-private area.
Guest Rooms offer flexibility in terms of space and amenities. The guest quarters offer today's modern hard surface flooring with area rugs so that guests feel the warm inviting space they're expecting.
Guest room Bathrooms are clean, contemporary and luxurious with dramatic and photogenic showers!
The take away from this project is not the targeting of the age, but the mindset and the behaviors of the generation that has been tagged with "Millennials". It's all about being social, online and staying connected. At the end of the day we are also Aspiring to be Instagram worthy. We attempted to create a handful of great backdrops for the "selfie" and for posting online. From the unique metal shelving unit punctuated with books and artifacts to the living wall in the kitchen and a cracked mirror installation in the elevator lobby that screams "selfie". First and foremost, we want guests to feel like there is something of value here and that their money is being spent well. We can't wait to welcome you!
