Terracotta brings a warmth into every space and enhances even the coldest of color schemes in your home or office. I believe it is important to keep this trend fresh and contemporary by combining it with elements such as botanicals and bold prints. Think toasted shades like cinnamon, rust, ochre, pale pink, and burgundy.

This Dusty orange is an antidote to all the white and gray we have been living with in recent years. Like oak and rattan, terracotta, both as a color in the material is a rising star right now because like classic cognac leather and wood, it’s a lovely counterpoint to cooler palletes.

Terracotta is really an extra punchy and warm neutral which is what makes it such a useful color. It’s undertone is orange, but it’s saturated enough to be considered a color and not quite in neutral, it just depends where you draw the line. It’s much softer and easier going than clear orange, but livelier than brown.
Pair it with off-white, cream, Griege, other grays, taupe, and even blue gray or violet gray in some cases. The undertones that you should be careful about our pink beige, yellow beige and gold beige terraotta has a pretty strong pink/orange thing going on when it’s more yellow. In general though, it’s a very versatile color to utilize in the home.

As an accent color in furnishings, textiles and other case goods balance it with lots of fresh white and some contrasting hints of black or dark blue. It also goes very well with leafy greens.

As a paint color, I really love Sherwin-Williams cavern clay. Even though it was their color of the year for 2018, I think we are all just starting to embrace it. I think it’s perfect as an accent paint color. It is a very good complement to the trending blush pink’s and apricots. Adding a deeper version of the hue is grounding and adds depth to a pink color scheme that could otherwise look too precious. The execution in the space below with a two toned painted wall is perfection.

The painted ceiling in this space adds the right warmth and brings the ceiling closer to the sitting area. The blue sofa is the perfect complementary color to combine.

As a material, a terracotta is classic in the right context. It looks great in Spanish style homes but also French and Italian styles. I think the material is fairly neutral, like a wood floor since it does come in a range of tones. You can create an airy or rich look depending on the tone. A natural matte finish makes it look more current than a deep and glossy one.

Terracotta is the color of the earth allowing it to transcend cultural expiration for decades and even centuries to come. The color versatile but reassuringly indulgent. Interior Designers are striving to create spaces that encourage people to linger a little longer within them – something that is increasingly difficult when our lives focus on being everywhere and nowhere all at once. But, I truly believe that terracotta is the color to help us achieve that.

Tina Delia, a native of Ocean County, NJ, current resident of Philadelphia, is the Founder and Principal Interior Designer of Delia Designs. For the past nine years, Tina has been steadfast in her vision and continues to develop herself personally and professionally. She is dedicated to excellence and insistence on forward thinking design.
At the forefront of her designs is the idea that our spaces have the ability to transform our lives. She is looking to move us, inspire us to see, think and create freely. After all, it's not only about creating beautiful spaces, it's about touching the lives of the people who live, work and walk through those spaces.
About the Intern
Eleni Palamidis, a native to Philadelphia, is currently a student at Community College of Philadelphia and will be transferring to Moore College of Art and Design in the Fall. She has always had a passion for interior design and creative ventures. While at Moore she will be pursuing a major in Interior Design with a minor in Graphic Design and Business.
Growing up in the Greek community has shaped Eleni to be the person she is today. She has been fortunate enough to have visited many of the islands in Greece, to which she credits her love for Architecture. Eleni hopes to one day open her own Interior Design studio and continue to do what she loves.
