Colorful Ceilings add Volume
You don't have to settle for a white ceiling. It's ok to defy any interior design "rules" you've heard. Take a look at the following spaces. What do you think? Sometimes a monochromatic color scheme makes the room seem to go on forever!

Isn't this bright yellow ceiling just the sweetest in this nursery space? It really makes a bold interior design statement.

Maybe you just need a "Pop" of color like this space. You don't have to think of accent walls as just "walls". Accent colors can be on the ceiling!

Go Bold
Don't be afraid to go bold. Also, don't fight the architecture of the space. Sometimes thinking outside the four walls of your space is needed. The painted ceiling and door at the end wall of this hallway seemingly open up the narrow space. It feels bright and airy with just enough visual interest.

Another very smart application of the accent wall is to carve out a “purpose” for a portion of a room without having to put up any walls or get too creative with furniture. In the bedroom below, a child's bedroom is distinguished from a much larger space (that you can’t see in this photo). Admittedly, this look will require some serious skills with a roll of painter’s tape, but it’s clear that the end result will be well worth it.

This is hands down, my favorite space of this blog post. I love the architecture of this space, but I could see how being all white, it might be a little one-note. The accent color here is impeccably executed and gives this living space a natural vibe. Note, also, that they painted the baseboard in that section, since that would be a question I myself might have if I were embarking on a similar painting journey: to paint or not to paint the baseboard.

Here’s something a little different: painting the majority of the wall to draw attention to a corner. I found this shot on Architectural Digest, and I adore the idea of not fully painting this space (in terms of taking it fully to the corners, ceiling or baseboards). It is the most purposeful way of going about calling attention to the "green" wall.

Painted Stairs
Look closely and you’ll see that the stairs under this clever runner are actually painted the same color as the border. What a fantastic way to add character to a staircase. The graphic, modern feel is an added design bonus.

There are many reasons why you might paint stairs in your home. For example, if you have original floors that aren't quite sharp enough to live on their own, but have way too much character to replace entirely. The painted stairs here act as an accent color and add visual interest without being too overpowering.

It’s never easy to try and come up with cool ways to optimize your stairs and make them cooler. But, more often than not, something simple and enticing is the right approach.
